Planning on switching from Airtable to Google Sheets. Any concerns, or tips?

Planning to make the switch due to hitting the public API limit each month on the free Airtable plan. Has anyone done this? I am assuming this is possible but if you’ve done this and have any pointers, things to look out for etc, I’d be happy to hear them. Thanks!

Hey, glad to know that you’ve decided to switch! I’m sure it will be a great experience. Till other members reach out and share their experiences, I want to share a resource you can check before migrating. Please take a look at this doc about the Softr database: click here to check.

I would go for Softr DBs. Google sheets is slow and isn’t really meant for that type of use.

Hi Acefast, thanks for responding. Are you saying page content would be slow to load? By how much I wonder? The only reason I’m considering switching away from Airtable is because my site started hitting the free API limits each month, does Softr DB have higher limits, do you know?

Hi,

If you’re using Softr DB with a Softr app, there are no API limits as far as I know (though there is a limitation on the number of records — check the pricing page).

Another point to consider: Google Sheets is a non-relational database. Creating links between tables is not the same as with Airtable. Softr DB is a relational database and works (and looks) more like Airtable.
Formulas are not exactly the same as in Airtable…

That being said, Google Sheets is faster than before because it is now integrated into the way Softr handles its database connectors (even if the Google Sheet API is really slow).

But the fastest database is, and will continue to be, Softr’s own database.

You’ll need to experiment a bit with Softr DB to make your choice, but based on what I understand of your use case, I would recommend it.

NB: Softr DB is hosted in the E.U

Thanks @matthieu_chateau! Helpful information, I appreciate it :+1:
