Nquiry Regarding Softr's Transition to a Full-Stack Platform

Dear Softr Team,

I recently read about Softr’s evolution into a full-stack platform through your blog post. I appreciate your continuous innovation and commitment to improving your services. As a current Softr user, I have some questions and concerns about how this transition might affect our existing systems and workflows.

1. Compatibility with Existing Databases

I would like to understand whether Softr’s transition to a full-stack platform means there could be a potential disconnection from databases we’ve built using Airtable or Google Sheets. Currently, we rely on these platforms as data sources for several projects integrated with Softr.

  • Will integration with external data sources (Airtable, Google Sheets) continue to be supported after the full-stack transition?
  • If migration to Softr’s native database becomes necessary, will you provide tools or guidelines for transferring existing data?
  • Are there any anticipated challenges or limitations in the data migration process that we should be aware of?

2. Concerns Regarding Data Processing Capabilities

My primary concern relates to the application flexibility and extensibility we currently enjoy by processing data using Google Sheets’ powerful functions before connecting to Softr. We extensively utilize:

  • Complex data processing through functions like ARRAYFORMULA, LAMBDA, importrange, VLOOKUP, and QUERY
  • Data analysis and visualization using pivot tables
  • Automatic calculations and connections between multiple sheets

I am concerned that transitioning to Softr’s native database might limit these data processing capabilities, potentially reducing the flexibility we currently have. Could you provide insights into whether such complex data processing will be possible within your native database, or what alternative functionalities will be provided?

Additional Inquiries

  1. What level of data processing and analysis capabilities will Softr’s native database offer?
  2. Will there be options to use both external data sources (Google Sheets, Airtable) and Softr’s native database simultaneously?
  3. How will API integration and external data import functionality be supported when using the native database?
  4. Are there any planned changes to pricing policies or plans as a result of the full-stack transition?

We are excited about Softr’s development direction and hope to experience enhanced services in the future. However, I’m reaching out because we want to ensure our existing systems and workflows won’t be limited by these new changes.

I understand you must be busy, but your responses to these questions would greatly help us plan for the future. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Best regards,

Hi @carg, great questions!

You will still be able to connect to Airtable, Sheets, or any of our other supported datasources - we’re not forcing a transition of any kind, just offering our own datasource for users who might need a bit more scale, performance, and speed for their apps, without the cost and headache of an outside tool.

The exact limits, pricing, and data processing is yet to be fleshed out fully, but we will make this available once we complete it. Our own datasource will be quite similar to Airtable actually, with formulas, rollups, linked fields, etc so you can build and scale apps better than ever. Hope that helps!
