Big upgrade: Comments just got a whole lot better

We’ve got a fun release to share - a major update to how Comments work in Softr! :tada:

You might notice we’re not calling it the “Comments block” anymore. That’s because Comments have now been fully integrated into the Softr platform. No more external tables, no more setup gymnastics — just built-in collaboration that works right out of the box.

And yes… they’ve had a serious glow-up. :sparkles:

Here’s what’s new and exciting:

:white_check_mark: Built into your app — Comments are now tied directly to records inside your Softr app. You don’t need to create a separate table or manage the data manually. Softr handles it all.

:white_check_mark: Flexible display options — You can show comments:

  • As a block on a detail page
  • Or in a sleek new side panel, triggered from any list, grid, or table item with a simple action button

:white_check_mark: Rich content support — Users can include attachments, use rich text formatting, and keep conversations clear and productive.

:white_check_mark: Powerful permission controls — Define exactly who can view or post comments based on user roles. Great for keeping internal chats internal, or giving clients a space to leave feedback.

:white_check_mark: Global settings panel — Head to Settings > Comments to:

  • Customize how comments are sorted and displayed
  • Manage permission rules per source table
  • And see every block across your app where comments are enabled — all in one place

:soon: And what’s coming soon?

  • Email notifications so your users stay in the loop
  • User mentions to bring the right people into the conversation at the right time

:video_camera: Want a quick walkthrough? Check out this short video that shows how it all works.

We’re really excited to see how you use this to boost collaboration in your apps — give it a spin and tell us what you think!

Nice!!! How/where are attachments stored?

@Jjenglert love this feature! But this is not adapting to apps built on a dark background:

  1. For example, when I try to add a comment, its in black colour, even though the background is dark. Can you please fix this so that the text is white when the theme is dark?

  2. Also, the emojis dont look good on a dark background.

Please check the below screenshot:

Would love to be able to use this feature, please check! Thanks!

Great feedback! I’ll pass this back to the team and we’ll get it fixed up.

This is an excellent block upgrade. Really well done!
The improvements are much appreciated, and the upcoming features look top-notch.

It would be great to have more control over the comments block color theming to allow further customization and help avoid readability issues like the one mentioned above.

The color issues (+ button too close to edge) are bugs we’ll fix soon. We wouldn’t want to worry users to get those basic things right

Excellent update, I was lost at the beginning to configure (with the database) but in fact it is so easy because we do not have to configure a database!

Question: how do you know if there are existing comments or new comments? to let the user know quickly without having to click on each “comment” button

This looks exciting!

Where are these comments stored, and are they reference-able elsewhere?

We use Airtable as our data source. A very real part of our workflow could/would be to have external clients leave comments on a record through a Softr dashboard.

The internal team doesn’t need to respond to those client comments ever. I would want my internal team to be able to see them in list/grid/table views. Ultimately I would want to be able to export those comments to external sources.

Thanks for your help!

Great update! I can’t wait for the mentions feature and to see how it will work across the entire app.

There’s one feature I believe is essential to add: the ability to see the title of the item the comment refers to. Otherwise, when you open the side panel, you don’t know which item it belongs to and might end up commenting on the wrong one. I’m still testing the feature—it’s really awesome.

It’s only showing my comments and not other users who comment on the same block. What did I do wrong?

@nmarks66 check your user permissions. You might have permissions set in a strict way so you can’t see others comments.

This is what I currently have it set to.

Are you logged in? =)

That looks fine otherwise!

Yes, If I’m in preview mode to test comment with the other user will it show up?

Hey @Jjenglert

Are you able to add conditions/permission on comments so that Users can only see Comments from;

  1. Users that belong to their Business

Or

  1. Users belonging to the Business of the User that created the Record(s) being commented on

Example of use case:

Multiple Users from different businesses list products/services and multiple users from different businesses comment on these records and multiple users from record creator replies to commenter.

These comments should only be visible based on if they share the same businesses of the commenter OR if they share the business of the created record being commented on. (I.e. record creator can see all comments).
If record creator replies to commentor then commentor (and users belonging to same businesses) can see record creators replies.

Bugs:

  1. You cannot have more than one business commenting on record without everyone (belonging to same user group) seeing meaning this is useless for private commenting.

  2. You cannot respond to comments meaning there is no way to relate comments meaning this is useless for more than 1x topic being commented on within the record.

It would be cool if we could have a notification bubble next to the button that open’s the comments showing how many ‘Unread’ comments are there. Otherwise there is no way of knowing if new comments are added.

Also, when the comments open as a side bar. It always goes to the top of the comment section by default, if we have oldest on top selected in settings, we should see the newest ones as we click on the comments button. Meaning we should automatically be scrolled to the ‘Newest’ comment which will be at the bottom. Currently its scrolling to the top as we open the section.

Yes, I agree, some control over colouring would be great.

It would also be good to use emojis in the original comment, rather than only being able to use them to respond to an existing comment.

Otherwise, I’m loving this feature - it was Soooooooo needed
